Introducing…our Strength for Life community

This week we speak to…Sarah from Paris

I’m Sarah; I’ll be 60 in June.

I grew up in the midlands and came to Paris in 1989 as a student, and I’m still here!

I live in an apartment with my partner Mathieu and his 21 year old son Clément, and the cat Zip. I have dual nationality.

How did you get into yoga?

I started doing yoga about 8 years ago, with weekly in-person hatha classes. I liked it but I never really felt like I was progressing. During the pandemic I started using a free yoga App and a 10 min yoga wake-up became a daily morning routine with longer sessions at weekends. Then I found Emma via work after the pandemic and finally I have strength-based yoga and I love it!

“I’m building muscles and my body has changed!”

How often do you practice?

At the moment, I’m doing core drills about 6 or 7 times a week - it’s replaced my 10 mins wake up yoga - and probably 2 of the yoga sessions.

What's your favourite class?

My favourite class is the Tuesday Ashtanga Primary Series. I like it that it’s the same every week so you can really see progress.

I like it when my daughter Amelia joins the same class as me online. As she lives in London, the yoga creates a connection between us.

Why yoga / core?

Yoga helps with everything. I have less back pain, I’m stronger, and I feel better. It helps with the running. (I usually run twice a week).

What's your least favourite yoga pose/core drill and why?

The yoga posture I like the least is child’s pose. Bet you weren’t expecting that! My feet just don’t like it!

Yoga goals / plans for the future?

My yoga goal is to do a proper lift or arm balance. Crow, etc. I feel like I’m getting there, but slowly.

And yes, I’m marrying Mathieu at the end of May 2024. It will be a small international wedding, and we’ll be celebrating in a restaurant on the banks of the Seine.

Favourite food - your ultimate meal?

Food is where I get a bit French… so my absolute favourite would be oysters! And a nice glass of Pouilly Fumé. (In the winter, we buy two dozen oysters on the market on Sunday and they live on the balcony or in the fridge, and we eat 2 or 3 oysters as a sort of aperitif to make weekday evenings special).
