How to choose a good yoga mat
What to look for in a yoga mat
Material
What is the mat made from? There are a varity of options to choose from including PVC, rubber and cork. It is best to see what suits you and take into consideration if it is durable…can it be washed…. does it meet your needs? Also if you are eco-aware you may want to consider an eco friendly mat that is made from sustainable materials.
Thickness
Yoga mats come in various thicknesses therefore you want to choose what works well for you in regards to comfort and stability when doing your practice. Some people prefer thicker mats as they provide more cushioning for your joints. However if choosing a thiner mat it can offer better balance and grounding.
Size
Yoga mats come in different sizes; this is important in relation to your body size and also what kind of yoga you will practice. Alonger one may be more advantageous for your Ashtanga yoga practice.
Surface
What kind of surface do you prefer? A textured mat can provide more grip but a smooth mat can help with transition through poses.
Storage and transport
Where will you keep your yoga mat? Do you need to carry it to and from classes? Some mats come with a carry bag or a strap making it easier to store and take with you where ever you need.
Why the Manduka yoga mat is my favourite choice of mat!
I really love my Manduka mat. It really gives me great grip while allowing me to slide when I need to. Its hard wearing and durable, and so handy that its washable too and I love that being able to pop it in the washing machine makes it so easy to keep it clean.
